Football has returned with a bang. After 3 long months, football has blossomed our daily lives. Manchester United will be taking on Sheffield this Wednesday. With only 2 points separating them, who would come on top?
Below we give our Manchester United vs Sheffield United Preview:
Chelsea’s win on Sunday has multiplied Manchester United’s needs for a string of victories. Everything looked bleak when Manchester United fell behind to an early goal by Tottenham. But when you have Pogba and Greenwood on the bench, you will always have a chance to equalise and the same transpired. Pogba won the penalty and Bruno converted. Rustiness was clear to witness which shouldn’t be a surprise. De Gea and Maguire had a big contribution to the opposition’s goal. Worrying form of De Gea has led to calls for Henderson to take charge next season. United was flat in the first half with no attacking edge but subs changed the game in their favor. Solksjaer would have surely looked into it and fluidity of his side in the second half. They could have scored 3 to 4 goals in the second half if their attacking play had been clinical on the day.
On the other hand, they have had a disastrous return after 3-month hiatus in the League due to unfortunate pandemic. Unlucky to draw against Villa to embarrassing outing against Newcastle, it’s not gone well. Now they sit 7 points adrift of Chelsea who has occupied converted UCL spot at 4th. With the appeal of Man City’s ban still ongoing, there is always a chance for City to lose that, and 5th place might reward UCL spot. United currently occupy 5th place and currently leading Sheffield by mere 2 points. If there is a fixture for Sheffield to turn their dwindling fortunes around, this game week presents that. With no goal in the previous 2 encounters, scoring against a resolute United defense looks a long task. Wednesday could decide the top 5 fortunes for the rest of the season and both teams would want to be on the victorious side.
Line Ups and Injuries:
For United, the squad is mostly fully fit. Lindelof limped off in the previous encounter but nothing serious and should be available for Sheffield. (Sportsmole)
Sheffield on the other hand would miss Egan through suspension and Henderson would be ineligible due to United being his parent club.
As for line ups:
I expect United to line up in a more fluid and attacking set up with Matic, Pogba, and Greenwood coming back in the line-up. Sheffield on the other hand would more possibly line up the same except for ineligible players.
Man Utd: De Gea Wan Bissaka Lindelof Maguire Shaw Matic Pogba Bruno Greenwood Rashford Martial
Sheff Utd: Moore Robinson Basham Jagielka Stevens Fleck Norwood Berge Baldock Mcburnie Sharp
The previous encounter showed us the good and bad sides of United. Both teams put in an exhilarating 3-3 draw with United putting in an excellent comeback from 2-0 down to score three goals within 7 minutes. A late goal by Mcburnie earned Sheffield a deserved draw. It took place on Game-week 13 where Sheffield led United by a mere point. It was dominating first half by Sheffield until the subs and attacking quality of United pulled them through the dire spell. A repeat of that match would be Fabolous for neutrals and especially rivals of both the clubs.
Manchester United 1-0 Sheffield United
Chris Wilder has done an exemplary job at Sheffield and you can never treat his side as pushovers. They are more than capable to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford especially with no crowd due to pandemic going on. Defensively they will make it hard for United players giving them no space to pounce on. Big six of the Premier League have always found Wilder’s 3-5-2 formation hard to dealt with. But the major problem for Sheffield is goals. They will find it difficult to keep a clean sheet against this United side. Pogba, Bruno, Martial, and Rashford will be too hard to stifle. With uninspiring displays and lack of goals since the break, it’s hard to see them breaking that Jinx. United’s attack will have too much for Sheffield on the day. Therefore, I expect them to pile more misery on Sheffield by narrowly edging this match.
